The Opening of the Specialised Course “Mediation in Multicultural Contexts” was held the 2nd of May. This initiative was organised by UAIPIT, the Department of Legal Philosophy and Private International Law of the University of Alicante, in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana. It provides specific education for all those wishing to become mediators in multicultural environments.

The opening of the course was launched by Rosa Aragones Pomares, Director General of the Minor in the Family and Solidarity Autonomic Secretariat of the Generalitat Valencia, together with the Dean of the Law Faculty, Pedro Femenia, and the Director of the Course, Lydia Esteve, who highlighted the virtues of mediation as one of the more appropriate and effective ways to resolve conflicts, and the need for specialised education.

Marga Oliver, Coordinator of Multicultural Mediation of the Integration and Cooperation Directorate General of the Generalitat Valenciana, offered a brilliant and detailed explanation of the evolution of multicultural mediation in the Community of Valencia.

Lydia Esteve, also made a brilliant, practice-oriented and dynamic presentation of the mediation procedure and what the Law No 5/2012 entails.

Likewise, the Lecturer of the University of Valencia and expert on migration, Albert Mora, offered an extraordinary presentation on the current situation of immigration, and with Isabel Leal, President of the Federation of Mediators of the Community of Valencia, participants could practice an interesting and revealing role play.

Attendees showed great interest and motivation, having a pleasant and participatory evening.

Throughout the course programme, more than 35 students will develop different activities focused on its preparation as future mediators including conferences, role play in real scenarios, workshops, round tables and other activities aiming at learning from a practice-oriented perspective, techniques and tools for a successful mediation in every field, including the transnational and multicultural levels.

Furthermore, participants will analyse the phenomenon of migration, integration and equality from different perspectives, and the interaction dynamics between cultures and multicultural competence, as well as the various alternatives available for resolving conflicts involving multicultural aspects, along with expert mediators who will share their experiences in this field.

The ultimate goal of this course is to provide attendees with knowledge on the more relevant aspects of mediation, from a theoretical and practical perspective, granting professional qualification as a mediator, and access to the Mediators Registry of the Community of Valencia, as well as to future national registries of mediators.
