INAPI began operations as ISA / IPEA for PCT Authority

23.10.2014

The National Institute of Industrial Property of Chile -INAPI - celebrated its most relevant milestone since its foundation and the most significant over the last 25 years in the intellectual property (IP) field in Chile.

With the presence of the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Francis Gurry, and the National Director of INAPI, Maximiliano Santa Cruz, on October 22nd Chile celebrated its most relevant milestone in the IP field over the last 25 years.

That day INAPI started operating as an International Searching and Preliminary Examination Authority (ISA / IPEA) under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), becoming one of the 20 IP offices that assists both applicants, seeking international patent protection, and IP offices, in their decisions regarding patentability. Thus, INAPI becomes the second office in the region, along with the office of Brazil, which is able to develop International Search Reports and International Preliminary Reports on Patentability.

INAPI´s goal is to promote the use of the PCT system in Chile and Latin America. This system facilitates the internationalization of Chilean and Latin American inventions, and therefore boosts innovation and development in the region. For the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, this represents a milestone achievement, which accomplishes a long-term project of promoting the IP system in Chile, which begun during her first term as president, with the creation of INAPI.

"For two years we have been getting prepared to assume this role, by increasing our examiners and training them, acquiring new databases and information technology, improving our quality control systems to manage applications and examining patents, implementing the ePCT online system, among other measures. I know we will be up to the responsibility that the international community trusted us" affirms the National Director of INAPI, Maximiliano Santa Cruz.

The designation of INAPI as an ISA/IPEA two years ago involved a strong recognition by WIPO Members to the work done by INAPI, placing it among the main patent offices in the world.
