Every month in the UK, approximately seven million people visit websites offering illegal content. This represents a billion-dollar loss in the IP sector.
That is why last September, the City of London Police and the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) established the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), focused on IP crime online.
The main objective of the PIPCU is to tackle organised intellectual property crime such as piracy or counterfeiting that affects both physical and digital goods.
According to the City of London Police’s website, the unit’s activity will focus on “influencing online behaviour” through “education, prevention and enforcement activity.”
Furthermore, several national and international partners from among both governmental authorities and private industries will work together to face these important IP threats.
This special unit is made up of analysts, researchers and detectives. All of their activities will be coordinated by Bob Wishar. Mr. Wishar highlights the importance of collaborating with trade mark owners in order to combat Intellectual Property crime online.
