Google and Samsung reach an agreement on patents

10.02.2014

Google and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd announced on January 26th a global agreement on patent licensing. The companies have released in a statement that the agreement covers both the patents that are currently owned and those that will emerge in the next ten years, without disclosing the financial terms.

The head of the Samsung intellectual property center, Seungho Ahn, said that the agreement showed "the rest of the industry that there is more to gain in cooperation rather than engage in unnecessary patent disputes." On the other hand, Allen Lo, the patent attorney at Google, insisted that "by working together in agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential number of the litigations and focus on the innovation instead”.

Both Samsung and Google are companies that have been in the center of "smartphone patent war", although not as rivals, since the majority of the disputes have arisen between Apple and the companies related to the manufacture of smartphones based on Google's Android software, being Samsung the one that has stood out among them all.
