The EU and Morocco sign a deal on Geographical Indications

25.02.2015

As announced by the European Comission in a press release on 16th January, this deal will ensure the mutual protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) for food products between Morocco and the European Union.

The agreement will foster the trade relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and its European Union member-state neighbours, bringing substantial benefits to the agricultural sector of both regions.

This measure is part of the bilateral Action Plan (2013 - 2017) adopted between the EU and Morocco at the eleventh Association Council, held on 17 December 2013 in Brussels. Several agreements have been reached since 2013 including the signing of the fisheries agreement on 18 November 2013, and the progress of negotiations on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA).

The latest step of this growing partnership was the agreement between Morocco and the European Patent Office (EPO) to recognise European patents as valid on their territory, a measure that will enter into force on 1 March 2015.
