Last Monday, April 27th, Google announced the launching of the Patent Purchase Promotion, an experimental marketplace. The Web giant purpose is to combat patent trolls by buying patents from anyone who wants to sell them.
Google will open a portal where everybody will be able to present the patents they want to sell and how much they ask for them. This portal will be open between May 8 and May 22, and Google will then review all the submissions and contact with submitters, by June 26, to let them know if they’re interested or not on buying the patents.
Once they have studied all the patents, Google wants to close all the transactions as quick as they can with every seller getting paid by late August.
On the announcement, posted on the company’s Public Policy Blog, Google explained this initiative by saying: “By simplifying the process and having a concentrated submission window, we can focus our efforts into quickly evaluating patent assets and getting responses back to potential sellers quickly. Hopefully this will translate into better experiences for sellers, and remove the complications of working with entities such as patent trolls.”
But, who are the “patent trolls”? This expression is used to define a person or a company that purchases as much patents as it can without the intention of developing the products. Instead of making money from the product, its only intention is to detect infringers and sue the offenders.
The question is, what does Google get from all this? Well, Google is not doing this just to help sellers; with this experiment, Google tries to get a bunch of patents before patent trolls do. If they can achieve that, they will save a lot of money and time.
