The denomination "sangria" belongs exclusively to Spain and Portugal

23.01.2014

The European Parliament approved last Tuesday, January 14th the use of the denomination “sangria” to identify the beverage produced exclusively in Spain and Portugal. The rest of the Member States of the European Union can only use the denomination “aromatized wine-based drink” followed by the country’s name where it comes from.

This exclusive use of the denomination “sangria”, assigned to the Iberian Peninsula, occurred within the framework of the European Parliament, when voting the new regulation of product’s labelling and protection of aromatised wine-sector products under geographical indications.

With this measure, the term “sangria”, original from Spain and Portugal, gets protected and its production under this name  in third-party Member States is now limited, thus providing legal certainty to Spanish and Portuguese wine-producers.

The new normative, which must be applied by Member States in a period of a year, also updates the sales descriptions and “adapts them to the consumer information regulation”.
