The laborious investigation, in an early stage, was the result of a restrictive environmental sustainability legislation, on combustion of particular materials.
Antonio Marcilla, Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering, has worked with seven researchers, including Chair Professors, experts and technicians through the Prometeo Program, from the Valencian Region (Comunidad Valenciana).
The achievement brings the possibility of reducing up to 70% nicotine and tar and 30% of carbon monoxide, among others in each cigarette.
The patent has been established in Spain and Europe, and two companies have expressed their interest in the invention. The first one is a tobacco company and the second one is a fine cut tobacco enterprise. However, the chemical scientists from the University have also raised the idea of launching the catalyst directly to the market.
