The Chair of The UNESCO for the education on Copyright and Related Rights of the University of Alicante ("Chair of UNESCO on Copyright") has as its fundamental function to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge on copyright and related rights protection through education and research.
What is Copyright?
Copyright is a legal term that covers the rights of creators of literary works, artistic works and those derived from the human intellect. The creators of woks protected by copyright and their heirs enjoy certain economic rights like the right of reproduction, distribution, public communication and transformation, as well as moral rights, including recognition as the author of the work, respect for the integrity of the work, the right to decide if the work is going to be disclosed and how, etc.
What are the Related Rights?
The related rights are those that have been developed around works protected by copyright. They grant similar rights, although often more limited, to the following people:
- To the performers, with respect to their performances
- To the producers of phonograms with respect to their recordings
- To the broadcasting organizations with respect to their programs of radio and television
Why Protect Copyright and Related Rights?
Copyright and Related rights are essential for human creativity, offering to the authors, holders, performers and producers certain incentives in the form of recognition of the created work of art as well as equitable economic compensation.
Copyright and related rights protect the authors and holders against possible infractions, trying to avoid unauthorized copies or acts of piracy.
Copyright and related rights protection contribute to intensify the culture, the entertainment and the knowledge in the entire world and the importance of the copyright and related rights protection has increased at present in the globalised world of Information Society and with the impact of new information and communication technologies.
Objetives of UNESCO Chair
To contribute to the dissemination of knowledge on copyright and related rights protection through education and research. To increase respect for copyright, providing a forum for ideas on copyright protection in the present Information Society and Digital Age. Also, to reach for the greatest efficiency in the undertaken actions, converging in the communication space the values that give sense to UNESCO as an international organism.
Through education, the Chair of UNESCO on Copyright organizes courses, congresses, seminars and workshops in order to expand knowledge on the importance of copyright and related rights protection.
Through research, the Chair of UNESCO on Copyright studies and analyses the present protection of copyrights at the national and international level, particularly the present problems of copyright and related rights protection in the Information Society and the repercussion of the new information and communication technologies on such protection.

Since 1997, the Chair of UNESCO on Copyright of the University of Alicante has been contributing to education on the importance of the protection of copyright and related rights through courses, seminars, workshops and conferences focused on copyright and related rights, along with the creation and maintenance of UAIPIT, the international legal Portal of the University of Alicante on Intellectual Property and Information Technology, which informs the public about the national Laws and Case Law on Intellectual Property of more than 55 countries, as well as European and international Case Law and legislation.
I. Educational Activities
First. In the “Copyright and Information Society” module within the Magister Lvcentinvs, Master Program in Intellectual, Industrial Property and Society of the Information of the University of Alicante, and the specialized course of the University of Alicante on "Copyright and Information Society" during the months of March to June, with a duration of four hours daily.
Second. Within the scope of the studies for the Law degree of the University of Alicante, offering the course “Internet and the Law”, including how to protect copyright on the Internet, during the months of February to June, with a duration of three hours per week.
Third. Annual International UAIPIT Congresses: Protection of Intellectual and Industrial Property in the Information Society
Fourth. Organize specialized courses, workshops and seminars on Copyright and related rights protection in the digital age, in particular on the Internet.
The Team of the Chair of UNESCO on copyright carries out research on all the topics indicated in the areas of activities above. Through specialized publications and educational activities, the Team of the Chair of Copyright of the University of Alicante disseminates the result of its research in the various aspects of copyright and related rights protection.
One of the most outstanding results of the chair of UNESCO on Copyright is its contribution in the creation and maintenance of UAIPIT, the International legal Portal of the University of Alicante in Intellectual Property and Information Technology https://www.uaipit.com.The International Legal Portal of UAIPIT is a technological tool that plays a significant and recognized role in research, the education and the professional practice of all those who are interested in Intellectual Property. On UAIPIT, one may consult the section of legislation, case law and links to access to the required information on copyright and related rights protection. UAIPIT is recognized as an important free Portal on Intellectual Property and Information Society, with thousands of daily users. It is a Project with a double focus: academic and professional, with special attention to all the aspects of the intellectual property protection, Information Society and international dispute resolution.
