The future of patent classification

01.10.2012

On the 1st October 2012 the EPO and USPTO published the result of two years of work to develop a common classificaction system, the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC). This system is based on the European Classification System (ECLAC) and the application of the practices of the EPO and the USPTO. It is an important step towards the harmonization of the global patent system. The CPC will enter into effect at the EPO and the USPTO on the 1st January 2013.
