The rulings of the ECJ in cases Lindqvist and Österreichischer Rundfunk are the most important judgments delivered so far by the ECJ in the field of personal data protection. The present article discusses their impact on the interpretation of EU Member States legislation on personal data protection, focusing, among other issues, on the requirements for the publication of personal data on the Internet and the restrictions to transfers of data to third countries. Attention is also paid to the consequences of including personal data within the scope of protection of human rights concerning privacy.
